Women's Resource Center
The Women's Resource Center at the University of Maine
The Women’s Resource Center at the University of Maine serves as a safe space for women for 20 years to find support as victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, or referrals to other services.
The center also provides basic contraceptives like condoms, menstrual hygiene products like pads, tampons and sanitary cups, emergency contraceptives, tons and tons of brochures on various topics affecting women, volunteer staff who have been trained in both safe zone training and mandatory reporting policies so they are better equipped to talk to students about sensitive topics.
Last year, funding for the WRC was shifted to the Rising Tide Center which has a goal of improving opportunities for female faculty members in science, technology, engineering and math, according to the University of Maine’s website. Fortunately, the center was reopened in August, at the start of the school year.
The WRC not only supplies students with basic contraceptives and health related information, they also host different programming every month, including an upcoming talk on contraceptives information that is not covered in most high schools, aiming to target first-year students with questions about sex, according to an article on Maine Campus, and the University's student newspaper.
The center is located in room 227 of the Memorial Union and
open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. to all students.
