The Mental Health Monologues

The University of Maine Mental Health Monologues

The Mental Health Monologues is an annual event on the University of Maine campus hosted by Active Minds.

The goal of the monologues is to break down the stigma of mental illness by making evident through narratives the experiences that one goes through.

The event raises awareness for the mental health community and helps to end the stigma surrounding mental illness by creating a space where people can share narratives and poetic expressions of their experience with mental illness. It also serves as an educational resource, as well.

Active Minds has worked since 2012 to change the negative stigma that surrounds mental health. They hold weekly meetings where anyone an attend, while also hosting multiple events throughout the school year. Their goal is to raise awareness of mental health and be a resource and support system for struggling students.

Nothing is filtered out during the performances. It is people within the mental health community going in front of an audience and sharing their firsthand experience. It takes a lot of courage for someone to make themselves vulnerable in front of an audience and it is worth the experience to attend.

Not only are you watching a performance, but you are helping someone overcome their fears and letting them get their voice heard.
